I was down on the deck When I first heard her smile And a spinnaker heartbeat ran out of my chest And I vowed that I'd make her mine So I'll bite my tongue when I see her out on the arm of another man And I'll sing her name as the sun wakes up but she don't seem to like it much Guess I'm all out of luck Well she’s taken of course But I won’t be deterred But the gifts that I offer don't seem to impress Well I guess we've got different tastes So I'll turn my cheek if I see them wrapped up in towels down the castle cove And I'll sing her name as the sun wakes up but she don't seem to like it much Guess I'm all out of luck Guess I'm all out of luck
2.
Awake The light Is creeping through the gaps The gentlest attack Of day And air The lodger in your chest Is asking you to rest Darling you've been carrying the weight of all our dreams Shouldering the expectations we filled to the seams So let's go to the shoreline where it's easier to breathe And fill your lungs up with the cool sea breeze Asleep The day Has melted into night With candelabra sky Behind Your eyes You’re disappearing off To where the sand is soft Darling you've been carrying the weight of all our dreams Shouldering the expectations we filled to the seams So let's go to the shoreline where it's easier to breathe And fill your lungs up with the cool sea breeze One day when we're older and our minds are far less sound We'll come here with our children and we'll show them what we found There's nowhere better to just be So fill your lungs up with the cool sea breeze
3.
Left and right two forks before me At a crossroads which way to go Decisions never were my forte Far from sorted man I don't know I'll set my compass true They all say stick to the way They all say keep on the straight and narrow But the narrow path is hard to walk alone They all say keep moving on They all say don't let your head go wandering Hold my hand we'll take it step by step On the narrow path Plot a course for charted waters Cause where I'm going I need a guide Someone to keep me true on the way Someone to stop me going astray Someone who knows me better than me on the inside I'll set my compass true They all say stick to the way They all say keep on the straight and narrow But the narrow path is hard to walk alone They all say keep moving on They all say don't let your head go wandering Hold my hand we'll take it step by step On the narrow path On the narrow path On the narrow path
4.
I need you like oxygen I am lost when you're gone When you leave every time I will try to change your mind I will wait by the door Til I hear foot on floor And if you think you'll leave my side I will try to change your mind Change your mind
5.
Thirty years ago today Your mother dear was born Thirty years of friendships wrote To celebrate the dawn Surrounded by her family She spent the happy day I wonder if you'll do the same When thirty comes to stay

Well my friend The tides are beginning to turn And the years Have all slipped away through our hands You have grown You're ready to take on the world If I don't Hear from you I'll understand Just know that If trouble ever finds you At the end of yourself Don't you ever worry About who you can tell You can call me up on the phone And I’ll answer, you’re never alone You don’t have to worry I’ll always be happy to hear your voice So just call me, pick up the phone And I’ll be there to bring you back home I’m always your brother I’ll always be here so just call If you ever need a friend Way back when You couldn't remember my name We would spend Hours just playing pretend Now you're heading out To find out who you will become Who's to say Where you will land in the end? Just know that If trouble ever finds you At the end of yourself Don't you ever worry About who you can tell You can call me up on the phone And I’ll answer, you’re never alone You don’t have to worry I’ll always be happy to hear your voice So just call me, pick up the phone And I’ll be there to bring you back home I’m always your brother I’ll always be here so just call If you ever need a friend There's no hour too late No problem too great That will stop me running To stand by your side By day or by night So just call if you ever need a friend I'm always your brother I'll always be here so just call If you ever need a friend

The sun Taking her place up in the heavens Filling the valley with a bright and hopeful light And we Are captivated by the vista The boats and paddleboarders carving through the waves I'll keep that scene as a photograph And we'll hang it up on the walls of our house And I'll treasure all these moments we took Pictures out the window The clouds Are rolling in across the river The rain is soaking all the tourists on the front But we Are wrapped in blankets on the sofa Just laughing to ourselves cos we are warm and dry I'll keep that scene as a photograph And we'll hang it up on the walls of our house And I'll treasure all these moments we took Pictures out the window All the memories will stay with me All the drinks we drank as we looked out to sea And I'll treasure all these moments we took Pictures out the window No I won't No I won't forget All the days All the days we spent No I won’t No I won’t forget All the drinks All the drinks we drank I'll keep that scene as a photograph And we'll hang it up on the walls of our house And I'll treasure all these moments we took Pictures out the window All the memories will stay with me All the drinks we drank as we looked out to sea And I'll treasure all these moments we took Pictures out the window

Spent our August in the Devon air Two long weeks where we forgot our cares but it's Time to clear the decks and pack our bags Can we take this summer feeling back? Wave goodbye to seaside paradise Sunset driving back to city life Doesn't seem like such a long way home When it's me and my baby on these country roads It's just me, my baby, and these country roads No we didn't see a drop of rain Til we headed north on winding lanes but no Autumn weather's gonna steal our joy We're together, that's enough and more Wave goodbye to seaside paradise Sunset driving back to city life Doesn't seem like such a long way home When it's me and my baby on these country roads It's just me, my baby, and these country roads Clearer skies now and the light is low We're still talking 'bout that old Bordeaux but the Fun we had together isn't done While we're chasing down the summer sun Wave goodbye to seaside paradise Sunset driving back to city life Doesn't seem like such a long way home When it's me and my baby on these country roads It's just me, my baby, and these country roads

Spent the day in my own company It's the last chance I'll probably get For a while at least til the little one has grown up a bit It's not that I don't want a family I'm the happiest I've ever been And I'll gladly give in and surrender all my introvert needs I won't waste a day when we're together We'll get outside whatever the weather Nothing I love better than time out with you But today I've spent all on my own Took myself off up the coast path Just me and my headphones and thoughts Sat and watched all the sails of the distant yachts glide on the sea There's a peace that I feel in seclusion There's a silence that speaks to my core There's a still quiet voice that I hear much louder out in the hills I won't waste a day when we're together We'll get outside whatever the weather Soon there'll be more voices than just me and you But today I've spent all on my own Soon we'll be three But today it's just me Soon we'll be three But today it's just me

I see you in the blue and white house In your Beatrix Potter jumper Strawberries and holiday spoons Getting buttons from the sideboard Oh Kay No I can't believe Thirteen years have gone so fast Oh Kay No you never saw Your daughter as a grandmother Evening trips to see you each March Singing at the Garrick Theatre Rory found me after you died Lying on the sofa crying Didn't get to say a goodbye Oh Kay No I can't believe Thirteen years have gone so fast Oh Kay No you never saw Your daughter as a grandmother What I wouldn't give for that

As tides roll in and weather turns And sand beneath me shifts I'll anchor to this truth I know The Father's promised gift His ranging eyes are fixed on me There's nowhere I can hide No matter what the circumstance He will not leave my side In harvest plenty, in famine lack In patient waiting, and when I turn my back The faithful Father never looks away His eye is on the sparrow The depth of this I'll never plumb Or come to understand Could I be seen and known by Who Ordains my future plans? In harvest plenty, in famine lack In patient waiting, and when I turn my back The faithful Father never looks away His eye is on the sparrow His eye is on the sparrow

Been a long while since we all spent time together Twenty four months since we had more than a day Gone are the summer’s we’d sit round the table None of us knew how precious it would seem We've only just started growing up But I miss holidays at St Justinians In years to come when we're all old and grey That's how I'll remember us Me and Rory and the little ones Rory took charge of the complicated board games Couldn't sit Dom in the car next to anyone Benny told jokes that were way beyond his years None of us knew how tall Obi would grow We've only just started growing up But I miss holidays at St Justinians In years to come when we're all old and grey That's how I'll remember us Me and Rory and the little ones That's how I'll remember us Me and Rory and the little ones

Sometimes in the night I still hear church bells And see you walking slowly down the aisle Never thought that I would be happier But four years on darling I am

The dusk is calling out to us both Across the city Chain your bike up outside my house Your hands are chilly I meet you on the doorstep, take your Selwyn scarf off Hold you in my arms once again One night a week is nothing, but that’s how I know we’re something Worth making time for on a dark night Autumn’s crown falls through the trees On sunset walks through muddy piles of leaves The fading light holds yesteryear's memories Of October nights with you, dear The kettle breaks us out of our gaze With its boiling Pour you out a warm cup of tea You must be freezing We’ll head out down the river, across Midsummer Common A path we’ll come to know oh so well One night a week is nothing, but that’s how I know we’re something Worth making time for on a dark night Autumn’s crown falls through the trees On sunset walks through muddy piles of leaves The fading light holds yesteryear's memories Of October nights with you, dear It's six years on we’re older, this October is one that Will always stick around in our heads But I’ll treasure all those Wednesdays, when I learned we were something Worth making time for on a dark night

Took a long drive down winding lanes going back in time Picturing how it was back in '52 Little thatched houses lined up on the shoreline Wondering how you'd feel if you were here too The holidays we had The places we'll take with us when we are gone The memories we made That we'll still talk about when we're 91 Photographed every street corner we came across Trying to figure out where you spent the night Narrowed it down to one or two old cottages When we get back you'll tell us if we were right The holidays we had The places we'll take with us when we are gone The memories we made That we'll still talk about when we're 91 And it won't be long Til we're not so young

When there's holiday to take And you're deciding where to go There's no better choice to make Than two weeks by the coast Than two weeks by the coast

about

Two Weeks By The Coast - 16 songs, all written and recorded on a summer holiday in Devon.

This project started as a fun challenge to spend some time on holiday writing. I ended up writing a song a day. At the end of each day I'd record a voice memo of what I'd come up with, and those are the recordings you'll hear on this album - the first or second time the songs were ever played all the way through.

There are songs about family, love, the sea, loss, faith, and seagulls. Some are long, some are short, some are serious, some are not. I love them all, and hope you will too!
